AIP represented a right-holder of the patent for the skin lifting procedure kit of Y. Jacobs Medical company, which was widely known during the Choi Soon-sil scandal, during the trials for the prohibition of patent infringement, damages, and invalidation. After six years of the trials, in late October 2019, the Supreme Court reversed and remanded, recognizing patent infringement (2019Da222782). This is the first case where the Supreme Court ruled that, when components were exported individually and assembled from abroad, patent infringement can be recognized as an exception to the territorial principle if the assembly of the components is simple. The ruling is also regarded as a historic ruling with many patent-related law issues. In addition, the case recognized the high amount of damages from patent infringement.
